Hollen Home | Our Kitchen Update

As I have been mentioning in posts the past few weeks, we recently embarked upon getting our kitchen cabinets refaced and a back splash done. I have spent most of the last year debating on whether or not we should sell our home or put down deep roots and stay here for a long time. I started making my lists about what needed to be done to move and then I started thinking about all of the things that have occurred in this little home of ours. I became nostalgic of the many band practices that were held in our basement over the years and the moments out on the back porch with many musicians and friends. I thought about bringing both of our children home to this house. Marin started crawling here, walking here. I've spent many a night and early morning upstairs in the kid's rooms, nursing a little baby in the glow of a night light. I thought about cramming all of our family into our living room and kitchen to celebrate birthdays and gender reveal parties.

This is home. I want to be here for quite a while, putting down some roots. Deep roots.

So, we decided to move forward with updating our kitchen since we plan on sticking around for an extended period of time. Completely replacing the cabinets was going to be way too expensive, especially since we had put in new floors a few years ago and they didn't extend under the existing cabinets. The floor would need to be redone as well. Our cabinets had good bones and structure, they just needed a refresh. We had updated the cabinet doors and painted them white a few years ago. That plan worked great for a number of years but I was getting super tired of repainting everything every year or so. The wood cabinets weren't wearing amazingly well either and our cat had clawed at many areas and drawers.

It's pretty crazy to me how much our home has changed over the years. This is how the kitchen looked when we bought the house...

This is how the kitchen looked before our cabinet refacing....

We contacted Home Depot for an estimate. They reface all of the cabinets, replace all of the doors, replace all of the drawers, etc. Our drawers were pretty much falling apart so I was super excited about new drawers. They also installed sliding shelves in our pantry and a few other cabinets and rebuilt a few of our cabinet floors because ours had been damaged. We have never had an actual cabinet floor under our kitchen sink. I imagine it existed at some point but had some water damage. When we bought the home, under the sink was pretty much dirt and spider world. We just kind of lived with it that way all of these years.

All of the cabinets are soft closing which is a cool, added bonus. We added hardware to everything as well. Our cabinets didn't have hardware before and I felt like I was constantly wiping them down due to cute, little, grimy hands constantly touching them.

I love how it all turned out. The backsplash has been a project we have wanted to do for quite a while now. I cannot believe how much brighter everything feels now. We kept the counter tops the same because luckily the previous owners owned a granite company. I love the contrast of the backsplash and dark counter tops.

There are still  few things to be done though. I need to go through and touch up a lot of the aqua paint on the walls. They also removed the white valance that was above the kitchen sink. Right now it looks pretty horrible and unfinished. I also want to get a cool pendant light for above the kitchen sink.    Little baby steps.

Before....

Overall, we are super pleased with the results. I am also very thankful to have our kitchen back. Not having a kitchen for a week with two small children is something I really don't want to have to experience again. This was our living room for that week...

Hallelujah. I am so thankful that this project is pretty much complete. Now we can enjoy our kitchen.

Hollen Holidays | Christmas Decor 2017

I always love this time of year and I say that every year. Decorating for Christmas is always something that I love doing, no matter what season we are living through in our lives. This is the season of a baby and preschooler at home. That being said, a lot of our set up is similar to years past. I added a few new ornaments and some new twinkle lights. We also have a new front door wreath that I didn't take a picture of. It lights ups and the lights are battery operated on a timer. Pretty neat.

Most of my shopping was done weeks ago for Christmas but until a few days ago, the boxes sat in our spare room. I kept trying to get to it during afternoon nap times but the kiddo's naps and quiet time were all over the place. I finally finished them on Saturday. It is nice to actually have gifts under our tree now. We only get to enjoy them for a week, but oh well.

I was going to move all of the baby stuff out of the living room before taking pictures but decided that this is our real lives. All of the baby gear is part of our lives at this moment in time and I wanted to document it. I will be glad though when I can sell all of this stuff and not trip over it constantly.

Marin is very excited about her hanging Christmas tree, the snowflakes on the window, and her ginger bread house. I love all of these things too because it feels like home to me. Don't get me wrong, I do love a perfectly set decorating theme but as long as we have small children, this is how things will be.

Blink-o always finds his place on our kitchen counter as well. He's a family tradition on the Hollen side and I always like getting him out every year.

Here's a look at the Christmas decorations of our past, at least far enough back as what's on the blog. I love being able to look back to see how much our home has changed over the past few years.

Hollen Home | Marin's Big Girl Room

When we were expecting our first kiddo, we decided early on that we weren't going to have a pink, princess nursery. I wanted something that was fairly neutral. We went with lighter green walls with lots of black and white accents. You can see the before and after of Marin's nursery here.  I've loved this room for the past 3 years.

When we found out we were expecting again, I started clearing out our office space in our spare room in preparation for our newest little one. Once we found out we were having a little boy, we decided it would actually be much easier to keep Marin's current green room as the nursery and make the office spare room Marin's new room.

I wasn't sure if she could be convinced to have a different room and give her little brother her old room, but once I mentioned that she could paint one wall whatever color she wanted, she was sold. I knew what was coming. Marin is all spunk and all pink. Most of our lives are covered in glitter and princess pink.  I now have the one thing in our home that I didn't think we ever would: a bright pink wall. I actually kind of love it. Only painting an accent wall and then painting the trim white really helped.

We gave Marin a big girl bed for Christmas that just sat in a box until her big girl room was completed. The matching dresser, an awesome little chair, and a new white bookcase were added as well. I bought her a little rug. My mom made her awesome pink curtains and she has some awesome princess bedding. It all has come together quite well.

Now when the sun hits the front side of our house, Marin's room glows a nice pink color all the way out into the hallway. She loves her new big girl room. I can't quite believe we have a bright pink wall.

Next up in nesting....A revamped baby nursery. Stay tuned.

It's The Weekend | Number Six

Our very neglected garden beds.
It's been raining the last few days around these parts and my heart has been so happy about it. It reminds me of my season of time in the northwest. I just want to go play music and drink tons of coffee. If only that were a distinct possibility right now. But, it is the weekend and I don't plan on even leaving my house today if I can help it.

I do enjoy finding great things out on the internet. There are lots of people doing some extraordinary things and I like keeping track of those things. Sometimes though, the internet is a cesspool of disgusting and hurtful things. Last night I was perusing Facebook and stumbled onto a video of a man beating a small child to a pulp. Due to the automatic play feature of most videos on Facebook, I didn't even realize what I was watching until it was too late. Ryan knows how it affected me I'm sure my pregnancy hormones were no help.  I was disgusted, frustrated, almost in tears. I went into my child's room and kissed and hugged her for good measure. There are nasty things out in this world. It took everything I had within me to get that image out of my head and to fall asleep last night. We watched a lot of funny cat videos and I read my new book in an attempt to drift to sleep.

Anyways, sometime the internet is sucky. But, the links below help me realize that not everything out there is frustrating and ugly. This week, we are talking pizza, making a house a home, some parenting stuff, and the idea of gardening. Enjoy.

I am making this pizza this week. I've been craving those artichokes.

To continue on the pizza craze, because we love pizza in this home, how about some pull apart pizza bread for good measure?

I am always thinking about how to make our house a home.  I love the idea of embracing your story for your home. So often I get caught up in trends and what everyone else is doing. Just do you.

This is a bit of a read but I thought it was interesting: How Parenting Became A Full Time Job.

I also found this interesting....Visualizing the data of parenting.

I've been thinking about gardening this year again. It's been a few years and I think Marin would have a blast. Here is some great gardening 101, especially with kiddos.

Bedtime hoops...Four questions you should be asking your child at bedtime. I love this.

Have a great weekend!

Christmas Baking

We don't bake a lot but I figured that because it's nearly Christmas, it was time. We haven't had a spare morning to do anything lately so today was the day. Marin and I picked out two recipes: Cookies and Reindeer Chow. They are pretty easy recipes and don't have a million ingredients. They are also delicious.

Marin takes any opportunity she can get to wear an apron.

Marin's favorite part is sneaking M&M's when she thinks I'm not looking.

Now we just need to share all of these goodies with other people so we don't eat them all ourselves.
