Baby Sullivan | Week Forty Two

Sullivan has been living his best life the past few weeks. Everything is new and ready to be discovered. Family vacation was a whirlwind of fun for him as well. I'll blog about our trip to Estes shortly but for now, I wanted to to write about week 42 of Sullivan James.

He still is not crawling. I've been trying to work with him as much as possible. We are attempting lots of tummy time, which he still really isn't a fan of. He will sit up and play for a long time but once he's on his tummy, he fusses and whines. Poor dude. If only he knew what adventures await once he is mobile. We are going to keep at it and I know one day it will click. I just don't want him to fall behind milestone wise. Crawling is also an important step in his development. Babies that skip crawling can face issues later on and I do not want to face that. He will be 10 months old next week and I'm ready for him to start moving around. It's time.

He spent his first night out of town with us in Estes and did such a great job. I realized when we were there that he has only ever slept in the hospital when he was born and then in his crib at home. Marin has sleepovers with the grandparents fairly often, but we haven't tried that with Sullivan yet because he still wakes up pretty early to nurse.

He slept in a pack n' play in our room where we were staying. He was pretty wiped out by the time he went down at night and slept decently well. The first night he woke up quite a bit though. He woke when I came in to go to bed. I picked him up to change his diaper and he was pretty confused as to where he was at. He realized that he wasn't at home. It was pretty cute. The second night he slept through the night without waking.

He ate all sorts of fun stuff on the trip. He tried pizza. He had grilled cheese sandwiches and broccoli. He tried a little bit of pie. He was living it up, that's to be sure. He has been taking less and less formula and breastmilk lately. I know a lot of that has to do with how much actual food he is consuming.

He had his first dentist appointment this week as well. He has four teeth and three more are swiftly on the way. We are now brushing his teeth as well. We found out that he has an oversized labial frenum which is an extra piece of gum flesh that comes down between the two front teeth. Once he is older, he will probably have to have it surgically cut so it doesn't cause issues later on with spacing and gum recession. It's pretty common in kids and a lot of time it causes the infant to not be able to latch well when nursing, like a tongue or lip tie. Luckily, we have had no issues with nursing from day one and I'm super thankful.

Baby Sullivan | Week One

With Marin, I did weekly posts documenting her first year. I kept it up for all 52 Weeks and I'm pretty proud of myself for that. I love that I can go back and see how much she changed and grew in the course of one year. There's a quote that comes to mind regarding parenthood: the days are long, but the years are short. I want to capture every moment that I can.

I hope to document Baby Sullivan's first year the same. Granted, with Marin, I lugged around my DSLR camera and shot solely with that. This time around, I'm realizing that I am without my camera most of the time and will be documenting most everything via my phone. I have a preschooler and a newborn now. Mommy doesn't always have the capacity to shoot a photo the old school way.

Sullivan is a week old as of today. The first few days of his time here on earth were spent at the hospital. Since I had a c-section, we stayed 3 nights this time. His sugar levels were pretty low and they monitored them very closely. A lot of that had to do with the fact that he's a pretty big baby. Every three hours or so, they would prick his adorable little heel and test his sugar levels. Luckily, after the first few days, everything was back where it needed to be and the monitoring ceased.

We are getting in a great groove with nursing. With Marin, those first few weeks were super hard because her latch wasn't very awesome. Sully has been eating like a champ and I feel like Wonder Woman. I've been pumping like a crazy person as well and I'm already working on a stash for when I return to work.

We are just taking each day as it comes at this point. We settle more into a routine with every feeding, every diaper change,  every length of time of sleep. He's sleeping in his crib at night and takes other naps in his swing/bouncer. We are learning the difference between day and night. Our nights have honestly not been too bad either. Once I was able to actually sleep on my side instead of awkwardly sleeping on my back practically sitting up, everything seemed to fall into place. A c-section is no joke though. The healing process this time around has been so different.

I feel like this time around has been a lot easier. The transition has been pretty smooth. Marin is warming up to her little brother for the most part. I can tell that she's dealing with not being the center of attention all of the time though. I'm trying to make sure that she doesn't feel left out. She's been a great helper so far.

Baby Sullivan...Week One.

Hollen Family | IT'S A......

Today is the big day, the day we found out whether or not we are having a boy or a girl. I seriously cannot quite believe that I am nearly half way through this pregnancy. It seems like just the other day, I was on vacation with Ryan, staying in Denver and holding a positive pregnancy test in my hand, mildly freaking out. Ok, I was pretty much freaking out. We had been trying but I didn't think I would be pregnant so soon. I couldn't even drink the the bottle of wine we had brought to our B&B or sit in the awesome rooftop hot tub that overlooked Denver. But, still worth it. And now....here we are.

I am one of those planner people that really needs to know if we are having a boy or a girl. I would like to think I could be carefree and spontaneous and not know, but this is reality people. My reality. If it is a boy, I need to buy pretty much an entirely new wardrobe unless he wants to grow up in glitter and pink. If it's a girl, I have more clothing for her packed away in Marin's closet than I know what to do with. I haven't gotten rid of everything. I have been a packrat mom with all of Marin's clothing.

But, once we are in the know, I am excited to start decorating nursery #2 and prepping for this little baby that will be here truly before we know it. I've been pinning stuff like crazy. Find me on Pinterest here. Here are a few nurseries that I love...Sources are linked below the image.

So, without making you wait even longer.....

We had our ultrasound and OB appointment today. Ryan was off so he got to go with me. The last time we did this with Marin, we had a few complications and scares. You can read about them here...but we ended up with a perfectly healthy, awesome little girl.

No scares today. Baby is healthy and good. Praise the Lord!

We had the ultrasound tech put the gender reveal in an envelope. Then we took said envelope to King Soopers and had them make us a cake and cover it up so we couldn't see it.

We had our family over for the reveal. It's a good thing we only had to wait until this evening. The suspense was intense. So...drum roll please....

The look of pure shock probably will tell you what I thought we were having....

Baby Hollen #2 is a BOY!!!!!
